Making Decision-making Easier

Let’s look at just one of the ways that self-care, such as exercise, can help to make decisions or overcome hoarding: as I write Facebook page posts for the entire year (works better than doing them one at a time), I often reach a point where I do not know what to write next. So I pause for a moment, do a little exercise (arm circles, anyone?) which gives me a tiny break without disrupting the flow of writing. The activity charges up my brain so it works better and I can see what the next line(s), section, or theme should be. Stretches, self-massage, especially facial massage, light cleaning, or neatening have similar benefit.

While taking your mini-break, try to relax your mind. Yup – stop thinking about the task for the moment. Let your mind go blank. Focus on keeping thoughts out of your mind to the degree that this is easy (like anything else, this gets easier with practice). If a thought not related to the task at hand pops into your mind, just say to yourself, “let it go, let it go.” Really good unrelated insights can be briefly jotted down – keeping paper and pen with you when doing these sessions is most helpful. When an insight comes regarding what you should do next on your main task, welcome it and immediately stop whatever else you are doing and go do what the insight is directing you to do. This approach works for nearly any other complex difficult decision-making task as well; this was the real key to my success with what others considered “impossible” projects.
